Bills receiver gives a thumbs-up to quarterback switch

Receiver [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] thinks Ryan Fitzpatrick's instinctive style will be a help to the Buffalo Bills' offense.
The senior member of the offense on Wednesday essentially endorsed the move to shift the quarterbacking job from Trent Edwards to Fitzpatrick starting with Sunday's game at New England.
Asked what Fitzpatrick brings to the field, [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] said: "It's completely different than Trent. Just a completely different quarterback. He does things that sometimes you may not advise. But he just plays. He just sees the game, and he plays. He's very witty and just plays. With that, you have a chance."
"He'll freelance a little bit more," [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] said of Fitzpatrick. "He's not afraid to get in the huddle and trust what he's seeing. Or tell somebody to do something else, however he feels it. He has a good feel for the game. He's played under some very good quarterbacks in this league that he's learned from. That's just part of his game."
The Bills rank last in the NFL in both yards and points. [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] has just four catches through two games.
Fitzpatrick and Edwards had comparable statistics last season. Fitzpatrick completed 55.9 percent of his passes with nine touchdowns, 10 interceptions and a passer rating of 69.7. Edwards hit 60 percent of his passes with six touchdowns, seven interceptions and a passer rating of 73.8.
Fitzpatrick, however, went 5-4 in games he played most of the way. Edwards went 1-5. Overall, Fitzpatrick is 8-14-1 as a starter in five previous NFL seasons.

"It's a little bit surprising, but like I said I think the overall feeling was we were not playing up to potential, being as good as we can," he said. "They felt like they needed to do something quickly."

"Obviously things weren't moving the way we expected them to," [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] said. "So they felt like they had to make a change. I think it's one of those things where we know what we have offensively and we're trying to get there. The coaches are doing whatever they can to help us get there. They felt like this move was the key to doing it. I guess better early than late. We still have a chance to do a lot of good things and we've got a big one this week."
What does Fitzpatrick do that a coach might not advise? "Against certain coverages sometimes he feels like he can fit a ball in and he'll try. It's basically just that simple. He just feels the game and reacts off instinct."
Said Fitzpatrick on throwing into tighter windows: "You don't want to throw the ball to the other team. That's for sure. That's obvious. But there also are times that you want to give your guys a shot to make a play. I think if the situation is right I'm willing to throw it up and allow a guy like Lee -- or whoever [to go after it]."
The idea of doing something to give the team a spark seemed appealing in the locker room. "His main attributes are being able to make things happen even when things aren't happening," safety Donte Whitner said. "And we need a spark right now, and I know we can handle it on the defensive side of the ball."
Asked about Fitzpatrick's best attribute, running back Fred Jackson said: "Just his athletic ability. You know he's an athletic quarterback. He's going to keep stuff alive with his feet. You know he can make some runs."
Asked what a quarterback change so early in the season says to the team, defensive end Marcus Stroud said: "It says we all need to get out there and do everything possible to make it go. And if we're not doing it then maybe somebody else can plug in and do it. They're willing to give another person a try."
Meanwhile,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Edwards shifted to the No. 2 QB role Wednesday. The latest benching almost surely will spell an end to Edwards' tenure in Buffalo after this season, when his contract runs out.
"It's obviously frustrating and disappointing but it's a long season," Edwards said. "I'm going to do whatever it takes to help this team win, whatever I can do to help Ryan win. That's what Ryan's been doing for me."
"It surprised me," Edwards said of his demotion. "I understand it's a business and we need a win, we needed a spark. That's what I was told by Chan."
Edwards stressed he's not taking his job any less seriously.
"It's been frustrating," he said. "But you guys know me well enough to where I'm not the type of person who's going to wear my heart on my sleeve. I do a good job of internalizing a lot of my emotions. But don't let that come across that I don't care. I obviously do care a lot about this team, and I care a lot about these guys, and I probably care maybe a little bit too much. That's just the way I handle the situation."
