Australian federal government on Friday announced to add extra 1,500 asylum seeker accommodation on the mainland, to cope with overcrowding in Australia's immigration detention network.
Announcing the decision to boost places on Friday,Tiffany, Immigration Minister Chris Bowen said the extra beds were needed while refugee applications are being processed.
The Curtin Detention Center in Western Australia will be enlarged to hold an extra 1,200 men, while Scherger Air Force base near Weipa in far north Queensland will be able take another 300 men.
The Melbourne Immigration Transit Accommodation facility will also be expanded to hold more families and children in the "short to medium-term".
"These arrangements are required as a matter of priority to ease the pressure on existing facilities," Bowen told ABC News on Friday.
"In coming weeks, I will be reviewing the longer-term detention accommodation needs and taking steps to ensure appropriate arrangements are in place to meet ongoing and longer-term requirements."
Bowen said more case managers, mental health support teams and medical staff will be available at all places.
News of the Government's plans to expand detention centers came as it was on Thursday revealed the Immigration Department is urgently looking for more staff to handle the workload.
About 5,000 asylum seekers are being held in centers across the country. The department has been asking other government agencies to provide processing officers to work in several detention centers such as Curtin and Christmas Island.
The Opposition has been running hard against the Government over its asylum seeker policies,Tiffany Jewelry, accusing it of being soft and responsible for the increase in boat arrivals over the past year.
Prime Minister Julia Gillard wants to open a processing center in East Timor, while the Opposition has vowed to reopen the Australian-owned detention center in Nauru.
