Developments in Japan's disasters, nuclear crisis
Police search for thousands of bodies in the coastal area near the Fukushima nuclear plant that has been largely off-limits because of radiation leaks.SEA RADIATION DROPS. Radiation levels off the coast have fallen dramatically, indicating a crack leaking contaminated water [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] into the Pacific was plugged successfully. Contaminated water continues to pool throughout the plant complex, often thwarting work there.ECONOMIC OUTLOOK. The Bank of Japan gives a bleak outlook for Japan's economy because production capacity is limited by destroyed factories and shortages of crucial goods and parts.
JAL UNPAID LEAVE. Japan Airlines Corp. asks its 12,000 employees to take unpaid leave and is reducing international flights, mostly Asian routes, due to decreasing demand for air travel. This Wave Disk Engine is unlike any conventional internal combustion engine. It does not utilize pistons, crankshafts, valves, cooling systems, spark plugs, and many other components of conventional engines. A transmission would not even be needed,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]! Instead, it utilizes a circular disk with many curved channels. Fuel and air enter through inlets positioned around the center of the disk. As the rotor spins, the fuel in [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] each channel is suddenly blocked from escaping. This results in a rapid build up of pressure which results in a shock wave being generated. The shock wave causes the fuel to ignite. As the rotor continues to spin and the chamber reaches an outlet, the hot gases from the combusted fuel are able to rapidly exit. This produces a thrust that makes the disk spin.
The benefits reaped by a vehicle using this technology would be many. Due to the reduced number of parts, the weight of a vehicle could be dramatically reduced. It has been estimated for the same horsepower, a Wave Disk Engine could weigh a thousand pounds less than a conventional engine. This weight savings could translate into additional fuel savings or could be used to add additional features to the vehicle. Perhaps with [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] such a weight reduction, vehicle bodies could actually be made of strong materials again, instead of fiber glass which crumples in even the most gentle of fender benders. Could we see a resurgence of large metal bumpers?
