CHICAGO — The Senators blew it Friday night in the Windy City.
Jonathan Toews and [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] scored in the shootout as the Senators dropped a disappointing 3-2 decision to the Blackhawks at the United Center. It was Ottawa's fourth straight loss.
Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson hit the post in the shootout and the Chicago faithful celebrated while the Senators shook their heads after another tough defeat.
Down 2-1 late in the third after [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] gave the Hawks the lead, the Senators sent it OT when Milan Michalek beat Corey Crawford late after Ottawa pulled goalie Brian Elliott to put an extra attacker on the ice.
Alfredsson also scored for Ottawa,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], while Elliott had an excellent effort with 24 stops for the struggling Senators.
Coming off a 5-1 loss to the Maple Leafs last Saturday at home, the Senators had six days to lick their wounds and the heat has been turned up on coach Cory Clouston to get Ottawa's season turned around.
The Senators got up off the mat with Elliott on the bench when Michalek was able to backhand a rebound by Crawford with 1:25 remaining to give Ottawa a sign of life and send this one to OT.
Until then, it looked like a careless mistake by Erik Karlsson was going to turn out costly. He turned the puck over to [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who skated in to put the Hawks ahead at 7:50 of the third.
With the score tied 1-1 after two periods, the Senators had to feel good about the way they were playing. Ottawa didn’t have many opportunities on Crawford, but didn’t allow a lot either.
Of course, the Hawks did force Elliott to make a big stop or two. One came midway through the second when Dave Bolland and Fernando Pisani broke in on a 2-on-1 with only defenceman Chris Campoli back.
Bolland got a pass across to Pisani, but Elliott was able to make the stop. For the most part Elliott looked solid and there wasn’t a lot he could do on the Hawks’ goal by Sharp at 4:08. After Chris Phillips was unable to clear the puck, Sharp scored the 150th goal of his career by tipping a shot from Brian Campbell at the point by Elliott on the glove side to tie it up 1-1.
Alfredsson opened the scoring on the power play only 49 seconds into the second. He took a pass through the slot from Karlsson and fired it by Crawford on the stick side to give the Senators a rare lead.
The Senators got off to the kind of start they wanted in the first. They didn’t allow the Hawks much in the way of scoring chances and Chicago didn’t register a shot on net until 8:56 of the first.
While Ottawa outshot the Hawks 7-0 in the first nine minutes, Elliott did have to make a couple of key stops later to keep Chicago in check.
“They (the Senators) are a team that’s wounded,” said Hawks assistant Mike Kitchen. “They’re coming in here, they’re playing the defending Stanley Cup champions and you know you’re going to get their best.” [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
The Senators host the Tampa Bay Lightning Saturday night at Scotiabank Place at 7 p.m.
