Texans' Head Coach Gary Kubiak Impressed with [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
[link widoczny dla zalogowanych] will get a chance to compete for the [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]' backup quarterback job.
And while that's not what was envisioned for the former Heisman Trophy winner when he was drafted No. 10 overall by the [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] in the 2006 [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] Draft, [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]' Head coach Gary Kubiak said he likes what he has seen from [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] so far.
The Texans signed [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] after his release from Arizona late last week.
"You can tell he's played a lot of football," Kubiak said told John McClain of the Houston Chronicle. "He spent the last two days with (quarterback coach) Greg (Knapp) and kind of getting down our base stuff. We'll see how far we can bring him, but I think he fits in what we do, and we're excited to work with him. To have Matt walk in your locker room gives us more confidence at the quarterback position and makes us stronger."
[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], according to McClain, spent the Wednesday practice "watching, learning and throwing a few scout-team passes." He told McClain he had been told he will have a chance to compete with Dan Orlovsky for the backup job behind starter Matt Schaub.
"My mindset is just to learn and compete and to soak it in as much as I can," [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] said. "It's a completely different offense that I'm used to as far as the terminology. I think I'll get it pretty quick. I've just got to keep studying. It's more play-action stuff. That's what I did a lot in college (at USC) and something we actually didn't do a whole lot in Arizona because Kurt (Warner) had his strength with four or five wides. We weren't under the center a whole lot."
Competing with Orlovsky is not what many envisioned for [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] four years ago, and there's little question [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]'s career thus far hasn't been what he envisioned. But working under Kubiak, one of the NFL's best coaches at developing quarterbacks,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], could be a chance for a new start.
If first impressions mean anything, Kubiak thinks he has something solid with which to work.
