Tavi Gevinson was there too,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], recognized as one of the mag’s 20 young women who are already changing the world. Sequined and spectacled in clear frames,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Tavi looked a bit sheepish when Chelsea Clinton described her as blogging her way to become one of the most well known fashion writers out there.
One of the most compelling moments of the evening (and there were many),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], came when Janet Jackson presented Donatella Versace with her award. Through tears (and in a black Atelier Versace gown),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Janet explained that when her brother died she called Donatella because she knew she would understand. “We both lost brothers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],” Janet said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], “we share a very deep bond.” Having her family wear Versace to Michael’s funeral “meant we were dressed in love,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],” Janet said.
Despite PETA protesters outside the event holding signs that called Versace the “designer of death” and had “Fur is Worn by Beautiful Animals and Ugly People” scrawled across an unflattering photo of the designer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she looked stunning in one of her own corseted silk fringe gowns from her Spring 2011 collection.
Other highlights? Julia Roberts’ hilarious acceptance speech,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in which she left the audience with one very straightforward piece of advice: Don’t tuck your hair behind your ear because it always looks bad. And for the rest of the night I tried not to tuck my hair behind my ear. It was very hard.
