They also waived outside linebacker David Nixon, who came off the bench and had six tackles in Sunday’s 35-31 home victory over Kansas City.
With middle linebacker [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] headed for injured reserve after suffering a ruptured Achilles’ tendon and Nixon waived, the Texans will have two roster spots for linebackers before they play their next game at Indianapolis on Nov. 1.
The Texans did make two moves. They waived offensive tackle Ephraim Salaam to make room for Duane Brown, who returned from his four-game suspension.
The Texans will try out defensive players today.
Kubiak also said Monday that history shows teams fix injury problems in-house. And the Texans have a lot of injury problems to fix, beginning with replacing [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] in the middle.
Kubiak said Monday that he and Smith would explore every option to improve the defense, including a possible trade,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but nobody was willing to make a deal at a price the Texans deemed reasonable.
Deadline passes quietly for Texans
LB situation to be addressed internally for now
The Texans talked to teams about a possible trade [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] to bolster their defense before Tuesday’s 3 p.m. deadline, but the asking prices were too high.
Adibi, Sharpton and Bentley are supposed to be healthy when the Texans return from their open date to play the Colts.
If everyone is healthy, Bentley is the most likely starter in the middle. That way the Texans don’t have to change two positions; Diles and Brian Cushing can remain on the outside.
If Bentley isn’t healthy, Diles can move into the middle and have Adibi replace him on the weak side.
Meanwhile, the Texans tried out nine offensive [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] free agents: quarterbacks Tom Brandstater and Jonathan Crompton; running backs Chris Jennings, Louis Rankin, Alfonso Smith, Javarris Williams and Clifton Smith; and tight ends Rob Myers and Derek Schouman.
“ ‘How do we fix it with (weak-side linebacker) Xavier (Adibi) and (linebacker Darryl) Sharpton and (linebacker Kevin) Bentley?’ That’s [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] all I’m looking at right now.”
It’s not surprising the Texans didn’t make a trade, even though general manager Rick Smith and coach Gary Kubiak tried. There are few deals at the trade deadline anymore.
“What I meant was that when I always approach things, I want to fix it with who I’ve got,” Kubiak said Tuesday after practice. “I can’t sit there and wait on something else to happen. I’m approaching it with, ‘Do we move (strong-side linebacker) Zac (Diles) (into the middle) or not move Zac?
