This Austrian wine is a blend of Pinot Noir (25%), St. Laurent (25%) and Merlot (50%). Medium-bodied with a lovely balance of black and red fruits, it has finely grained tannins and good acidity. There is a certain lushness on the palate, and the wine delivers interesting tobacco, chocolate and graphite notes on the nose and palate.
Definitely a cooler climate wine, the fruit is more elegant than jammy. The Merlot delivers rounded fruit and mouthfeel. St. Laurent is a cousin of Pinot Noir,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so between the two of them you have elegance and mid-palate red fruits.
The modern aesthetic visible on the bottle/label design is a reflection of the producer’s new winery,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which was built in 2004. Winemaker Leo Hillinger expresses himself and his land beautifully through this different and interesting blend. I’ve seen this wine described as a good summer red. While this is true, it has the complexity to hold its own quite well during the winter months as well. It is definitely a wine to seek out.
