Magazine Publishers Continue to Embrace the iPad
Interest in the iPad as a mobile magazine platform continues to grow with several new titles expected to hit the App Store in the coming weeks. One of the titles getting some major buzz comes from billionaire Richard Branson of Virgin fame.
Virgin’s new iPad only magazine is slated to launch tomorrow and will be titled Project according to a report from mocoNews. In an attempt to reinvent what a digital magazine should be, Project will take advantage of the iPad’s rich multimedia capabilities and make extensive use of video throughout the magazine.
The upcoming magazine already has a website and based on a recent blog post, it appears that the staff is looking forward to launching on Apple’s tablet.
The iPad, you see,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is set to change the world. With 40 million sales forecast by the end of 2011, Apple’s tablet will, in no particular order, a) singlehandedly save print media, b) revolutionise book publishing, c) force a re-examination of news consumption and d) get you laid. Although in terms of d),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I’d suggest that the kind of person who’ll let you violate them merely due to your brand of tablet computer might not be the bedroom firecracker you’d hoped for.
Virgin is not the only one taking advantage of the iPad to try and reinvent magazine publishing. The folks at TRVL magazine have embraced the iPad and what it means for both publisher and reader. The magazine is purely digital and is exclusively published on the iPad. TRVL is published by writers and photographers who love to travel and they use the digital edition to directly share their experiences with their readers. Without an expensive legacy print edition, the publisher has been able to offer the magazine to its readers for free and offsets its costs through traditional advertising and sponsorship.
With the iPad we’re seeing a democratization of the magazine business much like what we’ve seen with the traditional apps business on the iPhone. The iPad and App Store distribution system allows a small developer, or magazine publisher, to offer a product that can compete directly with the big boys. This is an exciting time to be a publisher,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], especially with the great opportunities the iPad has opened up for content owners and app developers.
