“It’s still there,” offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride said, adding: “I’m still holding my breath, hopefully, that he’s going to be able to last the entire year.”
One thing that usually helps contract negotiations: being the league’s leading rusher.
For now, it’s about playing football, though he’ll enjoy traveling to Virginia this bye weekend to spend time with friends and family and attend Marshall’s homecoming game.
Then again, many questioned Jacobs’ ability to be a No. 1 back as well. So perhaps two wrong running styles make a right.
Through six games,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] has 708 yards — 24 more than Peterson and 46 more than the Titans’ Chris Johnson, who ran for 2,006 yards last season.
“We have a different style, which makes us both unique,” [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] said. “Just to have that change-up me and him, just the difference of backs, it helps our team out tremendously.”
“I can’t say I was surprised,” [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] said. “It was a goal I set for myself from the beginning of the year. I really worked hard for it. Just having this opportunity to be a starter and being able to be at the top of the list is a big achievement for me.”
“It’s a joy to go back always,” [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] said. “But to go back at this moment, to be on top of the league, it just makes you a little more proud and makes you realize where you came from.”
Needless to say, there was some pause on the Giants staff when deciding whether to make [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] the starter over Brandon Jacobs.
[link widoczny dla zalogowanych] has 134 carries so far this season — only 29 fewer than he had last year. But so far, he says he hasn’t experienced any problems with his feet or ankles.
It was somewhere he expected to get, despite pre-draft projections as merely a change-of-pace back, a role as a backup the past three seasons and a couple of lower-leg injuries that slowed him down in 2009.
“We always knew he had the potential, and the more carries you get as a running back, the better you are,” running backs coach Jerald Ingram said. “He just now took it to a point to where he wants to be fed. He wants that on his back, and he wants to be the guy that makes a difference in what he does and he wants to win.”
Health concerns aren’t the only reason [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]’s running style raised questions about his ability to be a feature back. Pre-draft scouting reports cited a “lack of explosion” and underestimated the 5-9, 198-pounder’s power.
As the NFL’s leading rusher.
Therein lies the gray lining to [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]’s silver cloud. While he’s been effective and has provided consistency for the Giants running game with his ability to break tackles, he’s coming off a season in which he had stress fractures on the outside of both feet he attributed to his bow-legged running style. He also had an ankle issue that required surgery as well.
The rest of the weekend’s NFL action had occurred on Sunday. By Monday night, when [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] took his first handoff against the Cowboys, he knew how many yards he needed to surpass Adrian Peterson as the league’s leading rusher: 103.
After his second-to-last rush of the evening — a 22-yarder late in the fourth quarter — the Giants running back knew he was alone at the top.
This should be the perfect time for [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] to sit down at the negotiating table and extend his contract. He’s in the final year of a rookie deal that’s paying him only $1.001 million in base salary this season. Jacobs is earning $3.65 million this year.
But the Giants aren’t extending players until the uncertain labor situation clears up. [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] understands and respects that approach.
Sure, Peterson has played only six games because the Vikings already had their bye week. But don’t try telling that to [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], his teammates or his coaches.
