Prosecutors have rested their case against NOPD officers Melvin Williams and Matthew Moore in a federal civil rights trial. The two men [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] are accused in the beating death of Raymond Robair, and then trying to cover up the alleged crime.Dr. Kris Sperry, a forensic pathologist, was hired by Raymond Robair’s family to conduct the autopsy after the Orleans parish coroner performed one. During testimony, Sperry says he noticed severe internal bruises on Robair’s thighs and arms.
Sperry says Robair's spleen was ruptured. To explain to the jury how bad the spleen looked, he likened it to falling out a two story window and hitting a tree stump."The extent, the severity, the distribution... of the injuries all raise serious red flags as to how he was killed," Sperry said.The government alleges Robair [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] was beaten by officers Williams and Moore on Dumaine Street on July 30 2005.The ER doctor who treated to Robair at Charity hospital that day also testified. Dr. Michael Sigillito said Robair was unresponsive when he arrived and Sigillito was surprised that Robair didn't come in via ambulance.
“It would be extremely unusual for someone to be in that condition,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the condition that I saw Mr. Robair in that day, to be brought in by the New Orleans Police Department," Sigillito said. Sigillito says he never once spoke to Williams or Moore about Robair, but Moore in an interview with the FBI claims he did in fact speak to Sigillito and tell him where they found Robair.Moore also told the FBI he found a bag containing a white powdery substance [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] near where Robair was standing on Dumaine Street. But hospital officials were never shown the drugs the officers believe Robair may have taken.The defense did call one witness this afternoon who only testified for a few minutes before court ended for the day. The trial is expected to resume tomorrow at 9 a.m. at federal court.
