Polian working through injuries to keep Colts competitive
INDIANAPOLIS — If there is a team Most Valuable Player candidate for the Indianapolis Colts at the midway point of the 2010 season, chances are the winner wouldn’t be a player or even a member of the coaching staff.
What with the number of injuries to key players so far this year, it’s been up to Colts general manager Chris Polian and the team’s player personnel department that had helped Indianapolis keep its head above water and in contention for a seventh AFC South championship. The Colts will bring a 5-3 record and are tied with the Tennessee Titans for the division lead heading into Sunday’s home game with Cincinnati.
Getting to this point, though, hasn’t been easy. Indianapolis loses two safeties for the year — Jamie Silva [knee injury in training camp] and Melvin Bullitt [hurt his shoulder in the early stages of the regular season].
Starter Bob Sanders was lost in a season-opening loss to Houston and isn’t expected back until early December. [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
The Colts went out and brought back safety Aaron Francisco, who was with the team a year ago but not re-signed after the 2009 season. Francisco was sitting at home in Phoenix after a brief training camp stint with Carolina.
Wide receivers Pierre Garcon (hamstring), Anthony Gonzalez (ankle/knee) and Austin Collie (thumb/hand/concussion) go down and Indianapolis turns to rookie undrafted free agent Blair White.
And with depth thinning at running back — Joseph Addai out with a neck/shoulder injury, Donald Brown nursing a strained hamstring and Mike Hart suffering an ankle injury — undrafted rookie Javarris James returns.
James had been released at the end of training camp and had spent time with New England and Washington before returning to the Colts.
And there’s more. [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Tight end Dallas Clark (wrist/hand) goes down and tight end/special teams ace Jacob Tamme steps in. Middle linebacker Gary Brackett misses a game with a groin strain and rookie linebacker Pat Angerer gets the call. Weak side linebacker Clint Session (elbow) gets hurt and former Colts linebacker Tyjuan Hagler is signed and plays.
While the remainder of the franchise bedrocks (quarterback Peyton Manning, wide receiver Reggie Wayne, defensive end Dwight Freeney, and safety Antoine Bethea) have remained intact so far, there’s been a revolving door in terms of players coming and going.
It’s been quite an interesting season so far. [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
“I do think that in every position, whether it’s timing with the quarterback, that’s what is involved with the passing game is timing and accuracy, those things take time and work. Now, some of the guys that you have seen that have been able to step up and fill in have been working in that vein,” coach Jim Caldwell said.
“There are probably two positions where I think that is extremely relevant because you have more players dealing with trying to accomplish a particular technique, and that’s the offensive line and the secondary. So, it does take a little time, and that’s what we try to get done in practice. Now how much we can get accomplished, that is not quite certain. So, what you do is that you know that it may be somewhat limited so you usually scale back and cut back what you normally do. You do less and in some cases that is what we have to do.”
That’s exactly what the Colts will be doing this week as they prepare for the Bengals.
“The fact of the matter is even through some difficult times and things we have to do in terms of shuffling, adjusting our practice, so on an so forth, we are still able to patch it together and move forward and win three ballgames in [the second] quarter [of the season],” Caldwell explained.
“So now we go into the start of the third quarter and we are going at it exactly the same way, trying to focus in on one game at a time and then we will add them up at the end of the quarter. We still have all of our goals in front of us and we still have an opportunity and we plan to make the most of it.”
• Freeney responds to [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]— Earlier this week, Philadelphia Eagles tight end [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] said that Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney gave up on plays late in last Sunday’s loss.
“You can tell,” [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]said Monday during an interview with a Philadelphia area radio station. “I even talked to my coach about it. When we were chipping and blocking Freeney, it was getting to the point where he was ready to give upon the field. He was so frustrated and mad. You could tell after a few guys hit him, he would just kind of quit on a play.”
Freeney’s response came on Wednesday. [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
“I thought it was funny. He had two other guys helping him [block]. I wish I heard some of that during the game,” he said. “But I didn’t hear it. It is what it is. They won and hat’s off to them. We’ll probably see them again hopefully.” [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
• Roster moves — The Colts waived cornerback Deshea Townsend and running back Andre Brown Tuesday evening. Rookie wide receiver/kick returner Brandon James was signed to the active roster from the practice squad on Wednesday.
“He’s obviously been working hard,” Caldwell said. “He’ll have an opportunity to come up and do a few things for us.”
Indianapolis is expected to make another roster move sometime this week.
• Injury list — Running back Joseph Addai (neck) did some work on the side Wednesday but did not take part in the first practice of the week.

Also sitting out were middle linebacker Gary Brackett (toe), wide receiver Austin Collie (concussion), rookie tight end Brody Eldridge (ribs),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], defensive end Dwight Freeney (rest), running back Mike Hart (ankle), offensive tackle Charlie Johnson (back), safety Bob Sanders (biceps), weak side linebacker Clint Session (elbow), tight end Jacob Tamme (back) and cornerback Justin Tryon (foot).
Cornerback Jerraud Powers (feet) and defensive tackle Antonio Johnson (knee) both saw limited work. Powers is expecting to play against the Bengals on Sunday, but a final determination on his availability won’t be known until the end of the week.
Session was wearing an elbow brace on his right arm Wednesday. He doesn’t know when he will be cleared to return to practice. [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
