Wardlaw-Hartridge bands together to fight autism
Cliff O'Brien, a promising freshman infielder, isn't among Wardlaw-Hartridge's leading batters, but the rookie

and his teammates will be making a big hit during Greater Middlesex Conference Autism Awareness Weekend. The fourth annual event takes place tomorrow at North Brunswick's Community Park, where four doubleheaders will be contested.Players on all 16 teams will wear specially designed T-shirts to promote autism awareness. Pamphlets with information about autism will be distributed to all spectators.Former Highland Park star and former Rutgers University assistant coach Mike Garlatti, the father of a child on the autistic spectrum, founded the event to promote awareness about the country's fastest-growing developmental disorder. One in 150 children nationwide are diagnosed on the autistic spectrum.
O'Brien and the Rams raised money for the cause by selling wristbands to classmates. The green wristbands with gold lettering reflecting the school's colors are generic and sports specific. The words "Wardlaw-Hartridge" stand alone on the generic wristbands, while the name of a specific sport follow the school's moniker on bands designed for athletes at the Edison-based school. All proceeds

from the sale of the wristbands will benefit the Center for Lifelong Learning,

, a second-year school in Sayreville serving students from Middlesex County and elsewhere in the state with autism and similar behavioral disabilities.O'Brien and his mother, Linda, a 1989 Wardlaw-Hartridge graduate, came up with the idea to sell the wristbands as a fundraiser. Rams' head coach Patrick Sarullo said his players and their parents have worked tirelessly to sell hundreds of the wristbands."The idea of giving back is something that is very important to our school," Wardlaw-Hartridge Athletics Director Patricia Malizia said. "Many of our students know someone or have a sibling that does have autism. It is something that is close to home in many cases."Wardlaw-Hartridge, which joined the GMC this academic year, is actually playing in its second GMC Autism Awareness event. The Rams were invited to participate last year. They will play Saturday against Metuchen, whose head coach, Leo Danik, has been a driving force behind the event's success.
Danik provided Sarullo with information about autism, which the coach

will allow his team captains to share with the entire student body during a morning meeting today. Linda O'Brien said Sarullo was "very interested in supporting" the fundraiser."From the get-go he said that giving back to the community was something that was important to him," she said. "The autism awareness project was something that he was excited about."To put it in a nutshell, we thought (selling wristbands) was a way to get the whole school-community involved. I can't say enough about the players who very readily took those bands to sell. They were very eager to help and make this a success."
