created T-shirts and wristbands to be sold."Timon Kato, one of my students, came up with the wristband idea," explained Yorba Linda High School Japanese language teacher Teiko Ikemoto. "He personally donated $100 of his own money to help the club buy the wristbands so that 100 percent of the wristband income will be donated to the Red Cross."Kato distinctly remembers buying a wristband when he was in elementary school during the 2004 Tsunami in Indonesia. It had such a significant impact on him, so he thought up the idea to help Japan.During the first week, Yorba Linda High School students collected $1,500. They ran out of the T-shirts in two days.
Key student helpers were Timon and Allison Jensen, and club officers Jungwoo Oh, Jessica Castellano, Adam Wagner and Allison Ruiz. One of the Japanese students, Jessica Imai, was personally affected by the earthquake as her mother was visiting Japan at the time. She survived the tsunami and safely made it home. Imai was able to contribute ideas with such first-hand information. At El Dorado High, $200 was raised in the first two days. Some of the opportunities to help involved getting your name printed in Japanese for 50 cents a letter. Making origami figures and getting your picture taken in a traditional Japanese kimono were other activities available for a donation. Wristbands were also sold."This was a rare and valuable opportunity for our students to be involved with something global," Japanese language teacher Joy Okada said. The district's Japanese teachers are Catrina Lim at Esperanza High, Okada at El Dorado, Carolyn Ikuta
