While Congress banned other flavorings in the landmark 2009 tobacco legislation, it left the issue of menthol to the F.D.A. to decide. <br />The tobacco committee plans to issue a recommendation in March,<a href="http://www.olymall.com/marlboro-red-cigarettes-over-10-cartons-by-wholesale-price-p-42.html" target="_blank" class="postlink">marlboro red cigarettes</a>, but my colleague Duff Wilson says don&rsquo;t expect that to be the end of the issue. The committee&rsquo;s industry representative, who is a non-voting member, is a scientist from Lorillard, which makes <a href="http://www.olymall.com" target="_blank" class="postlink">Newport cigarettes</a> and is heavily reliant on menthol products for its revenue. The company also issued a news release saying that an economic analysis found that a ban would spur a “significant increase in organized crime activity” and potentially give young people more access to cigarettes. <br />The FDA began to regulate cigarettes in 2009. The agency subsequently banned all flavored cigarettes except menthols, but instructed its tobacco products scientific advisory committee to write a report with recommendations about the future of menthol cigarettes,<a href="http://www.olymall.com/golden-virginia-tobacco-c-8.html" target="_blank" class="postlink">Golden Virginia Tobacco</a>, which will be released in March. <br />According to The Wall Street Journal, Lorillard, which relies on the menthol market for roughly 90 percent of its sales,<a href="http://www.olymall.com/marlboro-gold-cigarettes-over-10-cartons-by-wholesale-price-p-27.html" target="_blank" class="postlink">marlboro gold cigarettes</a>, has responded to the proposal with a wide variety of tactics. Among other things, it has campaigned against the ban on social media sites such as Twitter and formed alliances with African-American groups. (African-Americans are the predominant customers for menthol cigarettes.) Although Lorillard led the opposition to a possible ban at Monday&rsquo;s hearing,<a href="http://www.olymall.com" target="_blank" class="postlink">newport cigarettes stamp</a>, other tobacco companies voiced similar positions. <br />Many analysts believe that a prohibition is unlikely, and as The New York Times reports, point to the recent resignation from the advisory committee of Dr. Gregory N. On Wednesday, you can look for the start of the University of Miami conference on the Business of Health Care in Coral Gables, Fla. <br />You might also want to pay attention to the Institute of Medicine discussion this week on “essential benefits,” part of what promises to be a long debate over exactly what health insurance coverage should look like.
