The Flamenco Festival is one of the Arsht Center’s most popular events, and the Ballet Nacional got an

enthusiastic reception from the animated weeknight crowd that filled the Ziff Ballet Opera House. But the quality of the festival has deteriorated since its debut in 2008. Last year’s edition also featured two dance groups with more style than substance.
The opening piece, Dualia by Carlos Rodriguez and Angel Rojas, was Spanish classical dance, a formal style that incorporates castanets and emphasizes curving, sculpted shapes over the improvisation and rhythmic footwork of flamenco. Set to a recorded score by Jose Nieto it sounded like a smarmy, Spanish-flavored classical-lite film soundtrack, Dualia featured couples in cliche sensual poses and shifting group patterns that never gathered any kinetic power. It had lots of pretty pictures but no substance.La Leyenda The Legend by company director Jose Antonio, a

former star dancer and Spanish-dance veteran, was better, though it also tended to emphasize form over expression. Leyenda is a tribute to legendary flamenco dancer Carmen Amaya, whom Antonio knew. In Leyenda he portrays her with two women: Elena Algado, as “She Immortal”, wearing a white man’s suit and a white dress with an enormous ruffled train Amaya was famous for her ability to manipulate traditional long bata de cola skirts and for sometimes dressing as a man, and Cristina Gomez, as “She Woman”, in feminine red, then black, dresses.
Algado and Gomez are intense, impressive performers, and Leyenda is strongest when Antonio focuses on them. In one section, the women dance in turns, framed icon-like between monumental black curtains. In another gorgeously calibrated image, they curl around each other, white and black ruffled trains swirling together, and you get a sense of a

woman with a multi-faceted personality. Striding through a corps of dancers costumed in earth-tone suits and dresses, Algado and Gomez seem vivid,
