Sentiment was strengthened by Wednesday's modest rise on Wall Street, the Federal Reserve's Beige Book report painting a Hydraulic Hose picture of an improving U.S. economy and accelerating European manufacturing activity.Michael McCarthy, chief market analyst at CMC Markets in Sydney, said that "investors now expect the U.S. and Europe to make more significant contributions to global growth prospects."
Still, the political turmoil engulfing the Middle East and the consequent rise in oil prices continued to provide a cautious backdrop to trading. "Right now, outlook concerns are driving the market more than current economic fundamentals," said Tsuyoshi Segawa, equity strategist at Mizuho Securities in Hydraulic Hose Tokyo. "As it's unclear where crude oil prices and the North Africa situation are going, choppy trading will likely continue" in coming sessions, he said.In the U.S. Wednesday, stocks finished higher after having sold off the previous day even as crude oil gold remained firm.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.1% to finish at 12,066.80 after a day of choppy trading. The Standard & Poor's 500-stock index increased 0.2% to 1308.44 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.4% to 2748.07.In currency markets, the euro was marginally weaker against the dollar ahead of the ECB's rate-setting meeting. The euro was trading at 1.3845, down from 1.3867 late in New York Wednesday. The dollar was Hydraulic Hose trading at 81.79 yen, down from 81.89 yen.April Nymex crude was trading at 101.83 a barrel,Construction Machinery, down 40 cents from its New York close, where its settlement price was the highest since Sept. 26, 2008.
