A military contractor
On Tuesday evening, Brittani Hood’s phone rang. It was her uncle. His Oklahoma National Guard unit was being deployed to Afghanistan, he said. He would be leaving town the following day.“When he called me and told me, I kind of freaked out a little bit,” she said. The news took her by surprise,Car Battery, Hood said. Her main concern Military Flags was for her uncle’s safety, she said; she knows there’s a possibility that he won’t come back.“It’s kind of scary,” she said.
Hood was one of several Stillwater High School students standing on the sidewalk in front of the school at a send-off for the 1st Battalion, 179th Infantry Regiment, which left Stillwater Wednesday. The unit will undergo additional training before deploying to Afghanistan in early summer with other units from the Oklahoma National Guard’s 45th Infantry Brigade Combat Team.During the deployment, the brigade Military Flags will conduct full-spectrum operations, meaning it will handle all military operations in a given region. Its tasks will include counter-insurgency operations and construction projects. Members of the brigade also will act as advisers to the Afghan military and federal police force.
Wednesday morning, supporters lined the sidewalks to watch the unit go by. Some waved flags. Others held signs. Others simply waved as the unit’s five charter buses passed by.The brigade held a larger deployment ceremony last month in Oklahoma City’s Cox Convention Center. Wednesday’s event was smaller in scale and gave Stillwater residents Military Flags the chance to show support for Stillwater area soldiers one last time before they deploy, said Rachelle Buck, a support specialist for Yellow Ribbon Support Services.
