Folks on Camano Island should feel the love waiting at the Mabana Fire Station on the south end of the Island. The auxiliary, Mabana Flames,GPS tracker,Toilet Paper Machine stocked a small room and attic with everything folks might need for several days. They offer fundraisers and work with the volunteer firefighters."The auxiliary is the engine behind making it a real shelter," said Emergency Manager Mike Simmons with the Stanwood Camano Fire Department. The idea on Camano is that folks make their way to the station. Say the power goes out for a few days, Simmons said."During a big winter storm, the end of the Island is the end of theToilet Paper Machine electrical cord," he said. "People prefer to stay in their homes, but you get cold or you want lights."That is where a respite shelter comes into play.Kathleen DuBois with the Flames said about five years ago, after a bad winter, the auxiliary began stocking supplies at the station. The Red Cross gave them cots to store in an attic space near the fire rigs. In one closet, the organized gang has boxes with items sorted for each potential meal. Food is a no brainer in the preparedness game, but the auxiliary has every "T" crossed. They have pots and pans. I bet some supply cupboards filled with food don't include cooking utensils, Toilet Paper Machineplastic bags, toilet paper, rubber gloves, batteries and cleaning supplies."This has been our mission," DuBois said.
